Obituary for Tony Chiovitti

Chiovitti, Antonio “Tony”

With the heaviest of hearts, the family of Tony Chiovitti announces his sudden and unexpected passing in the early hours of Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at the age of 63. Tony had just enjoyed the weekend at a variety of celebratory occasions with family and friends. He had also enjoyed his last Monday off with his ultimate pride and joy, his grandchildren Robert, 8, and Stella, 6, together with his wife Rachel when they spent the evening at Stella’s dance class, shopping for summer toys, going out for dinner, and then for ice cream at the kids’ request.

He will be forever missed by his loving wife of 42 years, Rachel, with whom he shared a teenaged courtship that blossomed through Toronto-New York love letters in the early seventies. Cherished by his children, Sandra, Dori (Frank Falcone) and Michael who will always remember his ‘strong recommendations’, tough (but super mushy on the inside) love and always being there for them. Proudest Nonno to Robert and Stella. Son of the late Carmine and Michelina Chiovitti who immigrated to Toronto from Boiano, Campobasso, Italy in 1959. Loving brother of Joe (Judy) and Carlo (Mary) Chiovitti and brother-in-law to Nick and Karen Martelli. He will be held dear in the hearts of his nieces, nephews, relatives and wide circle of devoted friends and business associates.

For Tony, there was no greater pride in life than that of being a loving and generous Nonno. Anyone who knew him knew the depth of his love for Robert and Stella and the endless amounts of pride and joy they brought him. He could never get enough of their big, strong hugs or their funny observations and stories about the day. They shared a special bond and will never forget him.

Tony was also a much beloved and well-known Richmond Hill small business owner, where he owned and operated a fresh pasta shop called Multi Pasta for the past 27 years together with his wife and family. He developed countless friendships there throughout the years among his loyal customers who visited the store as much for the compliments, talk therapy and corny jokes as they did for the NY style cheese ravioli. The store was another great source of pride for Tony, who lived to work and taught his family to do the same. Not bad for a ‘kindergarten drop-out’, as he would always say. ‘Work hard, play hard’ was the life lesson instilled in him by some of his New York relatives who supported and inspired him as a young adult.

Visitations will take place at the Vescio Funeral Home Woodbridge Chapel (8101 Weston Rd. 905-850-3332) on Thursday, May 19, 2016 from 6-9 p.m., and Friday, May 20, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 9:30 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church (300 Ansley Grove Rd., north of Chancellor Dr.). Entombment to follow at Glendale Memorial Gardens (on Albion Rd. at Hwy. 27).

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Tony may be made to either The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) cardiology via http://my.sickkidsdonations.com/TonyChiovitti or to Toronto General Hospital c/o Peter Munk Cardiac Centre.
